Oxford Street Pedestrian Zone: Pioneering public space design
The initial phase encompasses temporary modifications intended to gather user feedback, influencing subsequent permanent changes. According to Julian Lewis, director at East, the cessation of traffic marks only the beginning. “From that day onwards, we’ll start seeing a more welcoming and inclusive Oxford Street with new seating and public spaces springing up by 2027,” Lewis stated.
The complete transformation from Marble Arch to Tottenham Court Road involves a consortium of creative minds including Aspect Studios, Urban Movement, lighting designers Michael Grubb Studios, and heritage consultants at Authentic Futures. Their collaborative effort will see the incorporation of over 50 trees, two public squares, and enhanced amenities by 2027. This street transformation promises new features to enhance the area.

Community-focused development
Nabeel Khan, CEO of the Oxford Street Development Corporation, emphasized the project’s community-driven approach. “This test phase allows us to learn from user experiences and ensure the street’s future is inviting for both locals and visitors,” he explained.
The pedestrianisation project, first proposed in 2017 but delayed due to local government pushback, is now gaining momentum under London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s leadership. “Beginning the transformation on October 26 marks the start of turning the high street into a world-class pedestrian plaza,” Khan announced, highlighting the potential for economic revitalization and job creation.
