Vivid Contrasts in an Industrial Landscape
Japanese architect Ryue Nishizawa, renowned for co-founding SANAA with Kazuyo Sejima, has transformed a working landfill into a work of art with his latest creation, the observation platform, at Oono Development’s site in Toon, Ehime Prefecture. Named Final Disposal Site – A Landscape Created by Nature, Industry, and People, this installation is a striking part of the Setouchi Art and Industry 2026.

The Observation Platform and Transforming Industrial Spaces
Visitors, dressed in vibrant red-orange workwear designed by Suzuko Yamada, are transported by bus to the site. The color of their attire echoes the striking orange of Nishizawa’s platform. Positioned on a valley rim, this vantage point provides a visual spectacle, contrasting with the turquoise landfill lining and verdant mountains.

The site is curated by Kazuyo Sejima and features work from Shingo Masuda and Katsuhisa Otsubo, who have designed gathering spaces and a bus stop. This collective effort integrates the industrial environment with a unique visitor experience, bringing attention to the often-hidden infrastructures and processes associated with waste disposal. The platform highlights the innovative aspects of Japanese architecture in reimagining industrial spaces.

Setouchi Art and Industry 2026
This festival, organized by the Japan Industrial Art Foundation, spans seven active industrial locations across Okayama and Ehime prefectures. It opens doors to sites tied to industries like salt production, textiles, shipbuilding, and more, making art a part of these living landscapes. The collaborative exhibition elevates these spaces, drawing public attention to the malleable interplay between nature and industry, particularly as witnessed through this creative landfill design.
