At the western edge of Dongfengyun Innovation Park in Mile, Yunnan, the striking Red Valley Dwellings emerge from the landscape, envisioned by line+ studio. This architectural masterpiece, wrapped within red-earth terrain and eucalyptus trees, explores the traditional Hani mushroom house’s spatial philosophy. It boasts steep slate-roofed structures and thick masonry walls that harmonize with their natural environment.

An Artistic Evolution in Design

Initially intended as artist studios, the project seamlessly transitioned into the Muxin Valley Spa Center. This adaptive use highlights its flexible design, which integrates courtyards and stepped circulation throughout. The buildings resonate with their surroundings, embracing light, shadow, and density while blending into the forested valley.

Inspired by Tradition

line+ studio draws on the essence of Hani architecture, not by direct imitation but through abstracted spatial concepts. This design reflects robust bases and tapering rooftops that blend with the red terrain. The architecture avoids large glass expanses; instead, it features deep-set openings that manage Yunnan’s strong sunlight, casting changing light patterns over the day.

Material Harmony with Nature

Material choices reinforce this harmony with the landscape. The dark grey slate roofs mirror the shifting light, while red-earth toned walls and local volcanic stone extend the terrain’s palette. Black metal accents provide a sharp contrast to these substantial surfaces, balancing the design.
