Located on the banks of the Sázava River in Prosečnice, Czech Republic, a unique retreat named “Between the Rock and the River” has risen from the ruins of a previous cabin. Designed by Mimosa Architekti, this project embraces its past while introducing innovative design elements.
Origin of the project
The original cabin was destroyed by fire, leaving behind only a stone plinth. Rather than starting anew, Mimosa Architekti chose to preserve and integrate this plinth, using it as a literal and conceptual foundation. This decision elevates the new timber structure above the floodplain, protecting it from seasonal river floods and providing sweeping views of the surroundings when the shutter facing the water is opened.
Architectural features
The cabin’s exterior is clad in charred larch, employing the Japanese yakisugi technique, which involves scorching timber to increase its durability and resistance to weather. This choice pays homage to the site’s charred history and visually integrates the cabin into the surrounding pine forest.
Inside, the design shifts dramatically. The interior features spruce wood panels that provide a warm and luminous contrast to the exterior’s dark façade. This intentional contrast enhances the transition from the rugged outdoors to a comforting interior space. Meanwhile, the use of indoor lighting highlights how light can redefine the space, elevating the cabin’s ambience.
Design challenges and solutions
Situated on a narrow strip of land between the riverbank and cliffs, the cabin’s location posed significant design constraints. Mimosa Architekti embraced these geographical limitations, creating a structure that harmonizes with its environment. The meticulous design process spanned five years, from 2020 to completion in 2025, evident in the cabin’s intricate details and thoughtful placement.
