Cloud structure at MIXC VILLAGE: A gateway to fantasy
As you enter Dongguan’s MIXC VILLAGE in the Binhai Bay New Area, a striking vision greets you — a floating cloud installation by the Chinese design studio PILLS. Positioned at the entrance, this monumental structure floats from three to 20 meters above the ground, creating a poetic gateway to the retail oasis. Commissioned by China Resources Land, the cloud acts as a symbolic entry point, intertwining art with the location’s leisurely theme of ‘slow-commerce’ and its philosophy of ‘free at ease’.
This installation mirrors the cluster of white architectural forms positioned along the coastline, resembling an island in the Guangdong–Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area’s skyline. The cloud-like form, easily visible from nearby highways, provides a captivating visual interface.

Narrative design and the allure of escapism
PILLS approached the project with a narrative mindset, pondering how contemporary consumer culture craves emotional and immersive experiences. The design imagines the location as a mysterious island, guiding you to embark on a metaphorical journey toward an uncharted destination. Here, moments of rest and discovery await, united by thematic spatial chapters: Revelation, Landing, Encounters, and Gathering.
The floating cloud doesn’t just invite you in. It serves as a shading structure, a microclimate device, and an orientation marker — a soft threshold blending architecture, environment, and scenography. Mist systems and dynamic movement invite you to pause and engage with its presence.

Engineering an ethereal experience: Air membrane technology
To simulate a breathing cloud, the designers merged eight spherical surfaces into a continuous ring-shaped volume using advanced 3D modeling. The structure operates on principles derived from inflatable air technologies, monitoring air pressure and adjusting the helium-to-air ratio with temperature changes. This allows it to inflate and deflate rhythmically. Wind-sensitive mechanisms automatically adjust the cloud’s altitude based on environmental conditions.
With strategically timed misting systems, the installation envelops the plaza in atmospheric vapor. At night, lighting animates the white membrane, transforming it into a canvas displaying sunsets, starry skies, and more. As a result, this dynamic cloud becomes a living entity, reshaping its persona from day to night.

A beacon of light among retail paths and greenery
This living installation navigates among trees and paths within the landscaped plaza. Mist woven through its presence enhances the floating illusion, inviting you to pause and appreciate its delicate interplay with the surroundings.

PILLS, demonstrating their expertise in large-scale installations, connects with you through moments of wonder. From the airy membrane’s fusion with architectural elements to its role as a narrative device, this creation by @pills_architects marks a visionary leap in design and technology.
Technical prowess and artistic impression
The team incorporated tethering systems and an array of sensors to maintain stability and visual impact, especially during wind gusts or temperature shifts. LED lighting integrated under the membrane completes this scene, ensuring the cloud remains a glowing landmark after sunset. As Zigeng Wang, the studio’s principal designer, demonstrates, a seemingly simple cloud can become a beacon of artistic expression and technological prowess within an urban landscape.

With the collaboration of leading landscape designers Change Studio and lighting consultants TS Lighting Design, this installation at MIXC VILLAGE illustrates the power of narrative-driven design in commercial development spaces.
