Gisèle Freund was born in Berlin on November 19th, 1908. She began her career as a photographer at the age of 16 and quickly made a name for herself with documentary photography that showcased life across Europe during World War II. After many successful years photographing people from all walks of life, she turned to portraits capturing writers and artists including Pablo Picasso, Joseph Beuys, Henri Cartier-Bresson and Jean Dubuffet between 1949 through 1974 before publishing Photographie et société (1974).
