Carrying the Weight of War: Seth Globepainter’s Murals Reflect the Innocence of Childhood

If you walk down any busy city street, you’ll likely stumble upon a mural painted on the side of buildings. These murals can be anything from honoring local heroes to making political statements. Julien Malland, who goes by the name Seth Globepainter, is a French artist famed for his murals.

Julien’s murals reflect the lightheartedness, resolution, and purity of childhood. Present in various cities, from Paris to Jersey City to Amman, the large-scale pieces portray suburban scenes with a sense of humor. The faceless characters tend to be optimistic even as they confront adversity. In his most recent murals addressing the ongoing war in Ukraine, Malland provides a much-needed reminder of the resilience of children.

Currently, Malland focuses on a series of hand-embellished lithographs while prepping for his solo show at Fluctuart in Paris. This October 27 event will mark the artist’s debut at the gallery, and he also has a monograph publishing this fall. Fans can follow along with updates on that release and the latest murals by checking out Malland’s Instagram profile.
