In the historic neighborhood of Collingwood, Melbourne, Cottage House appears to be a classic Victorian workers’ cottage at first glance. However, the facade conceals a dwelling rich in dual narratives. Designed by Splinter Society, this home intricately blends heritage restoration with a bold contemporary extension, celebrating its history while embracing modernity.
The architects crafted a distinct identity for each part of the house. The original cottage proudly stands at the forefront, while a darker, modern extension unfolds behind it, linked by a garden courtyard that infuses the space with natural light and greenery.
The extension that began with dismantling
To create the new extension, the process went beyond merely adding space. Given the home’s location within a heritage overlay, the Victorian cottage was meticulously dismantled. Every component was cataloged and stored before the extension commenced. Upon completion of the modern addition, the cottage was reassembled using much of its original material, with added elements ensuring flawless restoration.
Highlighting the project are two original brick fireplaces—one restored within the cottage and the other enhancing the courtyard as an outdoor fireplace. The front cottage features soft grey timber, contrasting brilliantly with the dark metal cladding of the extension, articulating the distinction between old and new.
A dining space surrounded by gardens and sunlight
