A walk through a helix of views and interlocking staircases
The tower’s design features 24 staggered platforms, each orienting visitors toward different segments of the landscape. The journey starts below the tree canopy and progressively rises, revealing sweeping vistas of the wetland horizon. Unlike traditional observation towers, this structure doesn’t save its breathtaking views for the top alone; instead, it allows for a continuous engagement with the landscape during the climb.

The double-helix stairs are not just functional; they form the structural backbone of the tower. Xiang Architects, in collaboration with structural designer AND Office, constructed a system where interlocking stair flights connect with counter-rotating steel braces. These braces create a three-meter-wide vertical void, offering a striking visual feature viewed from below.

Wrapped in matte silver metal, the tower’s skin reflects the damp hues of the wetland on gray days, while radiating light and color during sunnier conditions, and taking on warm tones during sunset. This reflective property gives the tower a mutable presence, harmonizing with its natural surroundings.

Prefabrication: A mindful construction approach
Through parametric modeling, the architects translated complex geometries into 24 standardized modules, ensuring each component could be prefabricated and assembled on site. This minimized interference with the sensitive wetland environment, highlighting a considerate approach to construction.

The Chenhu Wetland serves as a winter refuge for over 100,000 migratory birds between October and March. The tower’s architecture transforms the simple act of climbing into an immersive viewing experience.
