Bangkok Blue Bottle Cafe: Blue Lantern Design Reflects Local Traditions

Japanese studio I IN designed the interior of Bangkok‘s first Blue Bottle Coffee cafe, drawing inspiration from Thailand‘s traditional lantern festivals. The focal point is a sculptural Blue Lantern that hovers dramatically above the coffee counter. The debut of the cafe highlights the unique blend of local tradition with contemporary design.

A Blend of Culture and Contemporary Style

“The main idea came from Thailand’s traditional lantern festival,” explained Yohei Terui, co-founder of I IN. The design mimics a floating lantern, bridging local culture with modern aesthetics in what they aptly call the Blue Lantern, an installation extending from the ceiling above the drip station. This design choice is a perfect reflection of the establishment’s commitment to cultural authenticity.

In creating the cafe’s debut in Bangkok, the design team aimed for an impactful and culturally resonant space. “We wanted the lantern construct to be noticeable and iconic as soon as customers enter,” Terui added. The intricate interior design further emphasizes the cultural connection, making the cafe an embodiment of local traditions like Thai festivals.

Local Materials and Color Palette

The cafe spans 178 square meters and features teak wood, a material native to Thailand, though often avoided in the West due to concerns about illegal logging. “In Thailand, teak is a staple in interiors,” said Terui, emphasizing the material’s cultural significance.

The interior embraces a palette filled with blue hues connected to the brand’s identity, complemented by a pale blue tone evoking the sky, a decision aimed at enhancing customer experience. The use of these colors creates a serene atmosphere for visitors.

Golden Accents Inspired by Bangkok

After exploring the city, Terui incorporated gold accents into the design. “Walking through Bangkok, the sudden bursts of gold stood out, and I wanted to integrate that memory into the cafe,” he shared.

This integration of gold harmonizes with the profound blue, offering a unique design narrative reflective of the city. Blue Bottle Coffee’s Bangkok location thus merges cultural authenticity with contemporary design, inviting patrons into an immersive, locally inspired environment. The cafe stands as a testament to the successful fusion of local culture and modern design.
