Tangent Design Group has reimagined the iconic Porsche 911 with a daring facelift, creating what could be described as “Chicago‘s urban safari.” By lifting it three inches and installing rugged off-road tires, they’ve morphed Stuttgart‘s sleek machine into an adventure-ready vehicle. The Urban Safari 911, crafted in Chicago, challenges the traditional boundaries of sports cars.
Explore how art transforms automotive design in another striking collaboration involving iconic car models and renowned artists.
Back in 2019, without a client brief to limit their creativity, the Chicago-based Tangent Design Group embarked on a bold experiment. They selected the 2021 Porsche 911 Carrera 4, drawn by its all-wheel-drive system, to undergo this transformation. Cloaked in Porsche’s custom Black Olive exterior with a tan interior, the car already had a distinctive flair that set the stage for its evolution.

Chicago’s Urban Safari: A Thorough Re-engineering Process
Tangent approached the project with the dedication of a product-development assignment. The original 992 model was meticulously scanned—down to bumpers and engine covers—which enabled them to design components that flawlessly integrate with the car’s sophisticated electronics. Full-scale prototypes were 3D-printed and tested for precision before finalizing them.

Transformation Under the Body
The car’s significant transformation lies in its new lift system, developed to increase clearance by three inches without altering the original suspension’s integrity. This additional height permits the incorporation of larger tires, redefining the car’s proportions. It’s similar to what Vagabund Moto did with the Porsche 924 S, in partnership with NINE ELEVEN OUTLAW and DakarGarage—another iteration of the urban safari theme.

Special attention went into the wheels, designed in collaboration with Brixton Forged. Prototypes were developed to ensure compatibility with the car’s expanded frame. The creation showcases wide fender extensions, redesigned rocker panels, and a distinguishing rear wing. With roof-mounted gear and auxiliary lighting, it embodies a rally-inspired aesthetic while respecting Porsche’s legacy—thus offering its own unique adventure essence.

This project predates Porsche’s factory 911 Dakar but draws inspiration from the brand’s rallying heritage. The design doesn’t replicate past models; instead, it carves its own contemporary path while embracing the rugged spirit of competition vehicles built for challenging terrains.

A Unique Offering with Future Potential
Currently, the Urban Safari 911 is a unique creation. However, Tangent is open to inquiries about replication kits, hinting at a future where its design language could become more widespread among 992-generation vehicles—adding even more to the adventurous landscape.
