Architecture and design firm Space Popular has unveiled a dynamic carpet gallery at the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, marked by a colorful, gridded carpet that sets it apart. This innovative exhibition space redefines the display of the museum’s collections, blending the physical and digital history of Dutch architecture within its cozy confines.
The Collection Gallery occupies a sleek, elongated area within the museum. It diverges from the traditional minimalist style by enveloping the area in rich, soft furnishings, offering a warm, lounge-like atmosphere. As stated by Space Popular, this design is meant to encourage visitors to linger and engage more deeply with the exhibits than they typically might.

Creating a Homely Atmosphere at the Gallery
“We aimed to design something that contrasts the usual bright minimalism of galleries. Our vision was to make it feel more like a social club,” the studio explained. The gallery’s darker tones and gentle gradients entice visitors to relax and enjoy the tactile experience provided by the plush carpeting and warm color palette.

Interactive and Thematically Arranged
Collaboration with graphic designer Mariana Lobão allowed Space Popular to implement a striking, digitally printed carpet, which features a 50 by 50 centimetre grid. This carpet organizes the gallery’s five themed segments, inviting a nonlinear exploration of the curated displays crafted by the Nieuwe Instituut’s team, enhancing the interior design experience.
Each section contains color-coded wooden podiums designed by Rob den Dulk, adorned with the same carpeting. They support glass cases housing the physical models, while other cabinets serve as interactive screens, enhancing visitor engagement. A 40-meter concrete wall functions as a striking backdrop for projections.

A Lasting Installation at the Institute
“The carpet’s geometry frames the gallery as a gentle, unrushed environment. It structures every podium and item on display,” the studio elaborated, emphasizing the intentional grid that guides the entire layout. This installation will be a part of the Nieuwe Instituut until May 2029, featuring dynamic exhibits that evolve with contemporary developments.
