The work
JAWF is an experimental design collection and a metal research project by Sarah Naghawi. It treats steel as a material to be formed, and the pieces show the results of that process.
Metal treated as a shaping medium also drives functional design, as in this sculptural seat. Gibson Karlo’s Refined Agricultural Metalwork Chair is worth a look.
The name JAWF comes from an Arabic word meaning inner chamber or cavity. The name points to the hollow forms at the centre of the collection.

The collection consists of self-supporting steel enclosures, each one an experimental metal design. In each one, the metal skin serves as the shell, the envelope and the interior at once.
Process: hydraulic fluid pressure
The forms are made by applying fluid pressure inside welded sheet assemblies. This pressure deforms the sheet from within, and the traces of that deformation are permanently retained in the steel volumes.

Steel’s capacity to define a space at architectural scale is explored in a retail project. Didea’s Steel-Infused Store Interior in Malta shows the material’s spatial potential.
