Mysterious Bigfin Squid Caught on Camera in Micronesia’s Midnight Waters

During a remarkable exploration in the deep waters of the Federated States of Micronesia, researchers using the ROV Little Hercules, along with the deep-water tow sled Atalanta, captured extraordinary footage of the elusive and mysterious bigfin squid, also known as the magnapinna squid. These aquatic encounters occurred at staggering depths of 2,478 meters (8,129 feet) and 2,700 meters (8,858 feet).

Mysterious Bigfin Squid Observations

The observation of these rarely seen cephalopods thrilled the crew aboard the E/V Nautilus as they documented the enigmatic cephalopod’s intriguing behaviors in the ocean’s midnight zone. Notably, they observed one squid engaging in sink-fishing, a technique used to capture prey in the darkness.

In a fascinating twist, the NA180 Corps of Exploration managed to spot two more of these remarkable creatures during their time in Micronesian waters. The elusive deep-sea dwellers, belonging to the genus Magnapinna, are known to be incredibly elusive, with less than 100 confirmed sightings worldwide. Thankfully, the deep-sea cameras captured their full display, adding valuable footage to the scientific community.
