Unveiling Simone: A Fusion of Literature and Design
In the heart of Copenhagen lies Simone, a bookstore with an unconventional design, designed by the visionary Derya Arpac alongside Lærke Ryom, Kasper Kyster, and Daniel Schofield. In this captivating space, known as the Simone Hybrid Bookstore, you’ll find more than just books; it’s a dynamic gallery, a soothing listening room, and a versatile venue for events.
Copenhagen’s innovative design scene is also evident in Copenhagen’s Habity Alarm Clock, which interestingly combines technology with aesthetic elegance.
This literary haven takes pride in specializing in rare and independent books and magazines, often featuring them in exhibitions and informal gatherings. With Arpac at the helm, the store’s interior is intentionally ‘un-Scandinavian’ in its design. It boasts aluminum and cherry wood shelving, leather-clad counters, and mobile book trolleys.

A Visionary Design Collaboration at This Unique Store
The concept sprang from dialogues between Arpac, who also collaborates with furniture brand &Tradition, and the store’s founders, Tugce Kayar Subay and Ibo Subay. This couple, seasoned in fashion media and marketing, transformed their passion for art and design literature into a flourishing “literary branding” business launched in February 2026. The shop serves as a physical manifestation of their curated libraries for exhibitions and brand spaces.

A Diverse and Evolving Space
Arpac’s design contributions include a distinctive system of cherry wood shelves that stretch and traverse the space like a building’s structural framework at Simone. This design element complements the varied aesthetic deliberately chosen over traditional oak or pine.
Expanding on this theme, Ryom created a leather-wrapped counter with zippers, similar to her Garments chairs for The Mindcraft Project, offering storage solutions within its unique textile facade. Kyster’s modular aluminum shelving system further enhances the store’s adaptability, allowing future expansion.

Craftsmanship and Artistic Flair
Schofield’s black-pigmented MDF bench and mobile book trolleys invite visitors to interact actively with the space. Artist Staffan Sundström rounds out the creative collaboration with original paintings, with the display changing as works are sold, keeping the environment fresh and engaging.

The shop features “the red room,” a nod to classic David Lynch styles, with striking red curtains encapsulating the 20-square-meter area destined for intimate events.

Events and Future Aspirations at Simone’s Space
Since its inception, the bookstore has hosted a diverse array of events, including book launches for creatives like photographer Lasse Dearman. The space has also become a cultural hub, curating installations for brands such as ASICS and Bonnetje Recut. Looking ahead, Simone plans to introduce a collection of “reading objects” ranging from bookmarks to innovative lighting and shelving solutions.
