Bristol-based artist Diana Beltrán Herrera infuses vibrant life into paper, creating elaborate sculptures that capture the essence of flora and fauna. Her recent work has flourished in complexity and variety, integrating materials like paperboard, thread, and cardboard to push beyond earlier boundaries.
Herrera’s latest creations dive deep into nature’s patterns with stunning sculptures of flowers, leaves, and coral formations. Coral reefs, known for their fractal and hyperbolic geometry, offer a mesmerizing challenge for her artistic interpretations. Utilizing thread as both a support and a decorative element, Herrera shapes colorful arrays of tentacles and structures, bringing to life diverse species in paper form.

Innovative Techniques with Textile Inspiration
“When working with embroidery, I am particularly interested in how paper can borrow techniques traditionally associated with textiles,” Herrera explains. “Thread becomes a way of drawing, connecting, and constructing forms.” This process allows her to blend the intricacy of embroidery with the rigidity of paper crafting, resulting in a tactile exploration of natural motifs.

Apart from her personal projects, Herrera is sought after globally for commissioned pieces. This month, she will transport her first collection of coral research artworks to the Deutsches Museum in Munich. The installation is set to open at the end of June, promising to enchant audiences with its exquisite detail. Explore more of Herrera’s work on Instagram.
