Defining her work as”magical realism,” award-winning, Tel Aviv-based illustrator Gabriella Barouch creates attractive images that elicit childhood nostalgia. Her different visual language is distinguished by delicate lines and a slightly muted color palette that’s influenced by her love of older picture books.
Each drawing portrays fantastical scenes where animals and people are buddies. Barouch plays the scale, frequently allowing animals are the dominant subject, while people tend to be depicted as small, fairy-like characters. “I’m mostly inspired by poetry, music, storybooks, character, and other musicians,” Barouch tells My Modern Met. “I adore miniatures and’m very inspired by small objects, I love playing with their scale, I think that it creates magical.”
