Conceiving New Social Spaces at Frieze Week
The Limen Bar, a revolutionary project by Max Radford in collaboration with CLLC, made its debut during Frieze Week in London. This unique modular experience was housed at the renowned Oranj natural wine bar, engaging visitors in an artful conversation that extended beyond typical gathering places.

The Modular Limen Bar: A Unique Fusion of Design Elements
Led by Charlotte Taylor and Pauline Leprince, CLLC broke away from traditional exhibition models. The bar was envisioned as a dynamic living space that marries spatial design, furniture, and objects with wine, food, and sound. Named after the Latin word for “threshold,” Limen serves as a transitional space between interior and exterior environments.
This innovative approach mirrors the transformative impact of pop-up culture on urban space, offering dynamic solutions for modern city life.

Collaborative Craftsmanship
The project featured collaborations with PS Lab for innovative lighting and Mateo Garcia Audio for immersive sound. Other contributors included Lewis Kemmenoe, presenting timber lamps with aluminum aspects, and Eddie Olin, who crafted bar stools from raw steel I-beams with a black-stained ash seating. Glassware designed by CLLC echoed the bar’s geometric aesthetic. This transformation allowed for a seamless integration of these diverse elements.

Ingenious Design and Mobility
The Limen Bar showcases a symmetrical design inspired by postmodern aesthetics. Built with imitation surfaces to mimic stone and metal, it emphasizes portability with materials that are light, thin, and theatrically appealing. This modular design enables the bar to easily journey to new locations for subsequent activations.

Future Horizons in Paris
Following its success in London, the creation is set to appear in Paris from October 21-24 at 10 Villa Riberolle, 75020 Paris, aligning with the city’s vibrant Art Basel events. Its evolving functionality continues to redefine the cultural and social dynamics of bar spaces.
