Paco Pomet leans into the absurd with deadpan precision. His oil paintings start in near-monochrome, then snap awake with jolts of color. Limbs stretch too far. Bodies sprout extra legs. Trees behave badly. The effect is quietly comic and faintly unsettling.
Much of the imagery begins with vintage black-and-white photographs. Pomet reworks them just enough to fracture their historical calm. What reads as nostalgia at first glance slips into surreal misalignment. The past looks familiar, then wrong.
His solo show Planet Circus is on view at Richard Heller Gallery through February 14, in Santa Monica. Expect tight craft, restrained palettes, and visual jokes that land a beat late.
