Tatiana Bilbao Estudio made Borrowed Earth, an installation at Art Omi that is part of the borrowed earth art omi project. The studio’s page also lists projects titled Silica II – Roble 700 and Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (ESB-MACC) Phase 2.

The work consists of four 7.5-foot crosses and one bench-form. It is intended to break down gradually across roughly two years.

Where the soil comes from

The soil for this soil installation comes from a construction site near Art Omi. The material was not simple to work with. Julia van den Hout called it a “challenging material.” She also said, “They were not always crosses in our initial conversations.”

Soil is also the raw material of a very different project: Soil and straw art from an abandoned Lisbon school turns ruin into sculpture, which makes a useful comparison with how Borrowed Earth treats its material.

Tatiana Bilbao Estudio is based in Mexico. The studio completed an aquarium in 2023.

The page also lists a project titled Architecture for the Community. MOS Architects made an aluminium sculpture at Art Omi.

Art Omi is a 120-acre sculpture park in Ghent, New York.

In 2024, Young Projects installed a wooden pavilion at the park, a different kind of work from this installation.
