The emblem for the 2027 Men’s Volleyball World Cup is a tall white shape with spikes at the top, a cluster of small squares in the middle, and wavy stripes fanning out toward the base. At first glance, it is hard to say what this emblem shows.
A sports logo has to work on a phone screen and on a stadium banner. It also has to make its point in a second or two, because casual viewers rarely look twice. A central idea that is easy to read matters more than a clever one that needs explaining.
Simplicity is what lets a symbol endure, and how mountain shapes make timeless brand logos shows how one recognisable form can carry an entire identity.
What the designers intended
The tournament will take place in Poland in September 2027. The organisers say the emblem draws on the World Cup trophy, whose industrial form has been reduced to a minimalist mark.
Placed beside the very distinctive trophy, the resemblance in this design is there, but the mark is not a direct copy. The silhouette is suggested rather than drawn in full.
According to the official release, four ideas combine in the emblem. The trophy silhouette forms the core. A circle stands for the Earth, a sweeping curve represents the net, and reaching hands with a rising ball stand for the players.
Maciej Bogusz, marketing director of the World Cup local organising committee, adds a fifth element. A wave rippling through the base represents the fans, who he says make volleyball distinctive.
Reading the volleyball world cup logo
Once the viewer knows what to look for, each element is present. The problem is the order of discovery. Most people will not dissect a logo, and the emblem asks them to.
Five concepts packed into one silhouette leave little room for each to register. The result reads as a busy shape rather than a clear symbol.
That said, judging a logo on first sight is a weak test. Many logos that drew criticism at launch later became familiar. The London 2012 Olympic emblem was widely ridiculed when it appeared, then became an accepted part of the event’s identity before the Games opened.
This volleyball logo also avoids the usual sports clichés. There is no generic shield and no ball with a swoosh. That makes it distinct, even if distinct does not automatically mean clear.
What comes next
The emblem’s first major appearance will be the draw on 3 December 2026. The ceremony takes place 125 metres underground in the Wieliczka Salt Mine near Kraków, and Polsat will broadcast it in Poland. Viewers elsewhere can follow it on the Volleyball World YouTube channel.
The draw will set the pools. Gdańsk, Katowice, Łódź and Olsztyn will host the pool phase, while Kraków’s TAURON Arena will stage the semi-finals and medal matches. Poland is the host, and Italy is the defending champion.
Fans also have a stake in how sports identities look, as fans designing Manchester City’s new kit with AI offers a different take on who shapes a team’s image.
Time will test this emblem more than any first reaction. The original author suggests asking again in September, when his view may be very different. Whether the wave, the squares and the spikes read as a single idea will depend on how often people see them together.
