Innovative Design Solutions in a Vast Barcelona Home
In Barcelona, Spanish architects Mireia Luzárraga and Alejandro Muiño, known collectively as TAKK, have creatively repurposed a former industrial space into a unique family residence. This expansive 400-square-meter (4,306-square-foot) site presented both opportunities and challenges, particularly regarding climate control. To address these issues, they introduced a freestanding bedroom unit that provided effective insulation and sustainable living solutions.
To tackle the issue of insulation cost-effectively, they designed their daughter’s bedroom as a standalone unit with its own insulation. Remarkably, this space is constructed from leftover materials from previous projects, highlighting sustainable building practices.

Flexible and Adaptive Living Spaces with an Innovative Bedroom Unit
The sleeping area incorporates concrete masonry unit (CMU) blocks, wood, drywall, recycled insulation, and wool. Cabinet jacks provide adaptable support, contributing to the unit’s versatility.

The structure offers two sleeping areas: an open, airy loft for warm seasons and an enclosed section underneath for colder months. This flexibility ensures comfort throughout the year.

Ingeniously mounted on wheels, the entire bedroom unit is mobile within the larger space, allowing for dynamic room layouts as needed. By leaving fasteners exposed, it can be disassembled with ease, ensuring that parts can be reused once their daughter outgrows the space.

Another example of dynamic architecture is seen in the modular greenhouse at London’s Barbican, blending tradition and modern innovation.

TAKK’s design not only showcases innovative architecture but also emphasizes sustainability and adaptability, creating a functional and responsible living environment with attention to interior design. Their transformation of the industrial home into a personalized space effectively demonstrates the potential for sustainable urban living.
