This waterfront residence overlooking Michigan‘s Grand Traverse Bay has been reimagined by the California-based Lauri Design Studio to include a unique “mosh pit” lounge, exemplifying the quintessential lakeside experience.
Originally built in 2005, Willow Point lacked the warmth its new owners envisioned for a serene lakeside retreat. They enlisted studio founder Jenni Lauri to soften the architecture with natural materials and handcrafted details, transforming it into a true water’s edge sanctuary.
Crafting a Softer Atmosphere for a Michigan Retreat
“For this project, every decision—from reworking the architecture to layering natural materials—was guided by how the home would be lived in, creating spaces that feel calm, connected, and meant for gathering,” said Lauri. The floor plan was completely reimagined to enhance the connection with the surrounding landscape.
Enhancing Views and Flow
The redesign involved relocating staircases, clearing sight lines, and framing views to improve spatial flow. The glass-wrapped lower floor includes interconnected areas for the kitchen, dining room, living room, and family room, designed as a spacious gathering area in harmony with the essence of a lakeside home.

Inspired by Nature
The kitchen features a new picture window in a concrete wall, offering views of the forest. The use of textured Ceppo stone for countertops mimics Lake Michigan‘s sandy shores. In the living and dining area, a beaded Kelly Farley sculpture hangs by a revamped fireplace amid soft and metallic furnishings, highlighting the charm of a woodland retreat.

“Layered textures and sculptural furnishings create an atmosphere that feels both refined and welcoming,” the studio noted, emphasizing the goal of encouraging long conversations and serene evenings overlooking the water.
Structural Enhancements
The central steel switchback staircase, connecting all three floors, was refinished in metallic plaster to add texture and depth. The main entry staircase was relocated and rebuilt with solid travertine, ash treads, and a curved plaster handrail, further enhancing the lakeside haven appeal.
A Loft for Family Gatherings
Upstairs, the newly created loft space hosts a family “mosh pit” with cushions for relaxation and views across the lake. Inspired by the nostalgia of a sunken living room, it has become a favorite spot for card games, movie nights, and family gatherings at the retreat.
“It’s the family’s favorite gathering place, hosting everything from card games and movie nights to afternoon naps,” the studio mentioned.
A Personalized Suite
The primary suite resembles a private apartment, including a lounge, kitchenette, and a Travertino Rizzi stone bathroom vanity overlooking Grand Traverse Bay. “The home was designed around the family’s evolving traditions, creating spaces where multiple generations can connect and build memories,” Lauri Design Studio said.
