Paris’ Iconic Bridge Reimagined
In the heart of Paris, JR has unveiled La Caverne du Pont Neuf, an imaginative installation that breathes new life into the city’s oldest bridge. Spanning the Seine, this sprawling artwork overlays a rocky façade over the Pont Neuf, offering a unique sensory journey through sound, scent, and augmented reality. The project, paying homage to Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s 1985 The Pont Neuf Wrapped, is accessible 24/7 until June 28th from Place du Pont Neuf Christo et Jeanne-Claude.
Exploring Historical Layers
Drawing inspiration from the quarries that supplied the Lutetian limestone for Paris’ historic architecture, JR transforms the Pont Neuf with an inflatable structure mirroring its geological origins. The bridge, completed in 1607, showcases the material history with images of limestone wrapped around its ancient arches. After facing weather-related delays, the installation officially opened on June 15th, complete with repair seams that narrate the story of its resilience.

An Airborne Assembly
Covering 2,400 square meters, La Caverne du Pont Neuf stretches 120 meters long and 20 meters wide. Its towering form between 12 and 18 meters uses air-filled, double-walled fabric arches, requiring 20,000 cubic meters of air. This innovative structure seamlessly combines printed fabric and an intricate ventilation system, creating a striking visual and physical experience.

Engaging the Senses
Inside, visitors traverse a fabric tunnel enhanced by an electroacoustic soundscape designed by Thomas Bangalter, formerly of Daft Punk. This atmospheric layer enriches the crossing, delivering a tactile sound experience. Augmented reality, developed with Snap Inc., introduces digital animations that connect with the physical environment, adding interactive elements inspired by 19th-century chronophotography.

Multi-Sensory Experience
Introducing scent for the first time in his work, JR collaborates with Sarah Bouasse and Odore Scola to diffuse fragrances throughout the installation. These scents evoke geological and historical themes, adding depth to the immersive experience.

Beyond the Temporary
Complementing the bridge installation, JR showcases Les esquisses de La Caverne at Galerie Perrotin through July 25th. This exhibition highlights preparatory pieces, offering a deeper look into the project’s creative process. As JR revisits Pont Neuf decades after Christo and Jeanne-Claude, he shapes a contemporary narrative where heritage and temporary art construct dialogues above the Seine.
