On a vast, sunlit lawn at Boom Island Park in Minneapolis, Franco-Swiss artist Saype unveiled a striking 310-by-75-foot ground mural, part of his renowned Beyond Walls series. This marks the series’ U.S. debut, with previous installments in 22 locations worldwide. The mural, artistically rendered directly on the grass, features gigantic clasping arms, symbolizing unity and hope. It graces the landscape alongside the Mississippi River, known as Misi-ziibi, or “Giant River,” by the Indigenous Anishinaabe people who regard it as sacred.
A City of Resilience and Solidarityw
Minneapolis has faced its share of challenges, thrust into the international limelight by tragic incidents and subsequent social upheaval. Yet amidst turmoil, this city is a hub of community support, where individuals consistently come together in innovative ways to uplift one another. A recent report by State of the Nation rated Minnesota highest for quality of life in the United States, highlighting its enduring spirit.
Saype was inspired by the warmth and hospitality he encountered during his time in Minneapolis. “I found an incredible humanity in Minneapolis—in the welcome of its people, their stories, their kindness. I’m deeply grateful for that,” he reflected. His art aims to bring people together, crafting a vision of unity that resonates far beyond local borders. “And this is the power of art: to bring people together. I hope this work will make people dream—here and far beyond.”

The Artistic Process and Community Engagement

Crafted using a special biodegradable medium, the mural is a temporary gift to the landscape, destined to fade naturally through weather and maintenance. Its creation drew hundreds of residents, who participated in forming a human chain around the artwork, a powerful gesture of solidarity and togetherness.
