“Don’t you think it’s dangerous to blur the distinction between abstraction and reality?” Olivia Vinall asks, stepping into the shoes of Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), a force in Surrealist art and literature. The line, provocative and poignant, is a highlight of Leonora in the Morning Light, a new biopic illuminating Carrington’s remarkable journey.

The narrative starts in 1930s Paris, where Carrington thrived amidst an avant-garde community that included Salvador Dalí and André Breton, alongside her partner Max Ernst. As the chaos of World War II erupts, Carrington escapes to Spain before finding solace and inspiration in Mexico, a locale deeply intertwined with her legacy.

The film, guided by directors Thor Klein and Lena Vurma and produced by Modern Films, draws from Elena Poniatowska’s biographical novel. It arrives during a renaissance of interest in Carrington’s work, particularly her early, otherworldly creations during a harrowing period in a Spanish psychiatric hospital—pieces thought lost for 80 years.

Modern Films is also credited with works celebrating bold artistic voices, including a documentary on Hilma af Klint and Boom For Real, tracing the younger years of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Leonora in the Morning Light is set for its UK and Ireland debut on May 29.
