A Mid-Century Icon Reimagined
In Košice, Slovakia, the 1960s residential marvel known as KOSMALT has undergone a striking transformation as part of the mid-century renewal movement. Originally a workers’ dormitory for the VSŽ steelworks, this thirteen-story building was meticulously redesigned by Atrium Architekti. The architects preserved the building’s distinctive structure, originally crafted by Ladislav Greč and Róbert Kandrík, while adapting it to contemporary living standards.
Timeless Materials Meet Modern Design
Inside KOSMALT, the restoration uncovered hidden treasures. Original terrazzo flooring and marble cladding were revealed, alongside the authentic steel beams that grace the shared spaces. The blend of old and new is seamless, with expanded and corrugated metal accents introducing a fresh architectural dialogue. A vibrant wayfinding system, featuring salmon, ivory, and yellow hues, guides residents through the building’s corridors as part of the retro-inspired aesthetic.

KOSMALT now houses 507 compact apartments, each approximately 21 square meters. These units boast expansive glazing and loggias, offering sweeping views of Košice. The architects focused on optimizing small living spaces, ensuring comfortable environments for both singles and couples. The communal areas retain their original scale, forming social spaces while maintaining the building’s symmetrical design, all nodding to the nostalgic revival theme.
