Circular design adapts to planned changes
A planned road expansion in Zushi, Japan, dictated the innovative approach behind the design of the Circularity Cabin, a cutting-edge modular timber home. Created by Takaaki Fuji + Yuko Fuji Architecture in collaboration with AREANO, this two-story structure is designed to be dismantled and relocated, ensuring it can accompany its residents wherever they may go. This adaptability is crucial given the temporary nature of its current site.

Off-the-shelf timber construction
The cabin’s framework utilizes standard timber sections available in Japanese home centers, assembled with bolts and screws to create a structure that is easily taken apart and moved. The design of this dwelling uses pine and cedar components that are sized for manageable transport and reuse, rather than permanent connections, allowing the building to transition into a new phase or disassembled for parts with ease.
The construction features a 1.82 by 1.82-meter grid of 105-millimeter-square columns. The exposed interior shows off this smart design, allowing the structure’s 45 by 105-millimeter timber members to remain visible, reducing the complexity of disassembly and repair.

The cabin responds cleverly to Zushi’s yato topography, its strategic openings and three high sidelights positioning make the most of the valley’s breezes.
