The survey, conducted by Panthera Tanzania, confirmed a first in Tanzania’s wildlife history: the presence of servals with a rare coat pattern. Unlike the typical large black spots of servals, the “servaline” morph has smaller, freckle-like markings. Dr. Charlotte Searle, Senior Ecologist & Data Specialist at Panthera Tanzania, noted the significance during their 2025 surveys in the Luganzo-Tongwe and Ugalla Game Reserves.

“Our camera traps documented two types of servals: the commonly known spotted ones, and the servaline servals, which are significantly rarer,” Dr. Searle explained. “Prior to this, few confirmed sightings had been recorded outside of the Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Uganda.”

“Being able to document these creatures is invaluable. It’s a privilege to ‘meet’ these animals through our technology, as their skittish nature makes in-person encounters a rare event,” Searle remarked.
