Photographer Kelly Conlin delves deep into the heart of Central Havana amidst Cuba‘s crises, focusing on local residences. Recent visits revealed pervasive rolling blackouts and food shortages, impacting daily life. Conlin reflects, “More than one person told me it was the worst they have experienced in their lifetime.”
Setting his lens on a few blocks in Central Havana, Conlin’s persistent presence led to unexpected encounters. An endearing wink from a grandfather invited him into a residence, where a multi-generational scene unfolded—a pedicure and sewing intertwined daily rituals.

Exploring Central Havana’s Living Spaces
This experience sparked Tender Weather, Conlin’s inaugural photo book. It pivots from the harsh streets to intimate domestic settings, portraying warmth and affection amidst adversity in local homes. “I didn’t expect to walk into a home and immediately make the photograph I wanted,” Conlin shares. Time spent in these spaces allowed people to acclimate to his camera’s presence, capturing their genuine moments within them.

Central Havana’s mingling of public and private life intrigued Conlin. “People spend time in doorways and on stoops, and open windows often give you a glimpse of what’s happening inside,” he observes. Inviting access into these homes meant Conlin had to remain visible, capturing intimate gestures—preparing food, touching, praying—that turned into the narrative of his work.

Cuba’s long-standing U.S. sanctions since 1960 have worsened post-seizure of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, impacting fuel supplies. In response, half the proceeds from Tender Weather will support medicine and essentials in Cuba. Conlin emphasizes, “It’s a small gesture compared with the scale of the problems people are facing. But these families welcomed me into their homes and allowed me to photograph very personal moments in their lives.” His work beautifully reflects on the art of cuban photography, capturing the intimate realities of the area’s residences.

In another example of documenting cultural narratives, Julie Blackmon’s vivid exploration offers insights into suburban memories and dreams.

The book is available for $45, offering a profound look into Havana life, where love persists despite hardship.
