The work

The Aurie Catheter is a reusable no-touch catheter designed to be reused up to 100 times with the Aurie Personal Disinfector. Its polished eyelets are designed to prevent urethral trauma, and a tip-end eyelet is designed to maximize emptying. A proprietary articulating support handle is designed to help stabilize the catheter in the body and prevent slippage during insertion.

His first thesis prototype was a sleek, handheld device that sterilized catheters using UV light. After nearly a decade of iteration, the concept evolved into the Aurie System, a reusable, no-touch catheter system.

Brain-focused medical devices follow a similar path from research to clinic. What TMS Therapy Treats and How It Works explains a non-invasive option for psychiatric conditions.

Materials

The catheter components are stated to be not made with phthalates and BPA.

The insertion sleeve and introducer tip are designed to protect it from grime and germs during insertion, so users can catheterize on the go. The portable Personal Disinfector cleans, disinfects and lubricates the catheter in 36 minutes. The user spends less than 30 seconds of their own time on the cycle.

The designer

The Aurie System has been granted marketing authorization from the U.S. FDA through the Class II De Novo pathway. The company says it is designing reuse of the catheter to be as easy as throwing a single-use catheter away.

Why reusable catheters matter

Around 600,000 Americans rely on intermittent catheters six to eight times a day to urinate. The company notes that because insurers can fail to cover enough catheters for their beneficiaries, people who rely on catheters can be forced to urinate less or reuse their catheters. The page states that standard single-use catheters carry a 50% annual chance of a severe urinary tract infection, which is a leading cause of death for people with spinal cord injuries.

Choosing any medical treatment is a personal decision shaped by confidence and good information. Why Self Confidence Shapes Cosmetic Treatment Choices explores how mindset influences those decisions.
