British photographer Tim Walker unveils his latest exhibition, “Fairyland: Love and Legends,” at the National Portrait Gallery in London. This major exhibit, known as the “fairyland queer exhibition,” opening on October 9th, 2026, showcases around 250 specially created portraits capturing the essence of Queer history. Curated by Susanna Brown with the creative touch of designer Shona Heath, the exhibition embodies five years of collaboration with Queer individuals and their allies, weaving connections between the past and present.

Running until February 7th, 2027, “Fairyland” reclaims the word “fairy,” transforming it into a celebration of identity. Walker’s photography style, marked by theatricality and sensitivity, aims to elevate the narratives of pioneering activists and contemporary voices from various spheres like art, fashion, and film.

The Exhibition as a Record of Queer History

The exhibition begins with a poignant representation of 1970s and 80s activism, showcasing founding members of movements such as the Gay Liberation Front and Stonewall, highlighting its significance. Influences from sixteenth-century Tudor portraiture subtly bestow a sense of aristocracy to figures historically marginalized. The portraits also feature key cultural contributors like filmmaker James Ivory and author Sarah Waters, each positioned with objects of personal significance, preserving a tactile link to their histories in this showcase.

Remembering the HIV/AIDS Crisis Through Solidarity

Another significant section sheds light on the individuals who responded to the HIV/AIDS crisis, including healthcare professionals and influential musicians like Marc Almond and Jimmy Somerville. Walker aligns their artistic brilliance with activism, showcasing their cultural impact during a time of adversity. The exhibit pays homage to the Rebel Dykes, a post-punk collective, through large-scale portraits and a short film narrating their political endeavors.

Fashion, Performance, and the Freedom to Become

The second half delves into themes of self-expression through fashion and performance, featuring icons like Jean Paul Gaultier and Lady Gaga. Walker’s interest in fantasy is evident in these vibrant portrayals, concluding with erotic reinterpretations of classic fairy tales. This innovative narrative intertwines themes of sexuality, humor, and individuality, offering a Queer perspective. This segment of the exhibition also stands out as a remarkable queer portraits exhibition.
