Baldwin’s Artistic Journey Inside a Giant Wooden Junk Drawer

“I typically create giant nostalgic but functional pieces, mostly through woodworking,” Baldwin tells Colossal. Her creations include oversized versions of items like a smudged Pink Pearl eraser, a Blockbuster Video membership card, and a half-used roll of Tums, each crafted in meticulous detail. This project pushes Baldwin to experiment with new materials and expand her creative boundaries inside her colossal wooden compartment.

Inspired by Shared Experiences from a Giant Wooden Junk Drawer

Initially inspired by her own junk drawer, Baldwin’s work was enriched by viewers’ suggestions. As she shared her progress online, people began suggesting objects from their own drawers. “It was a fun reminder that junk drawers are surprisingly universal,” Baldwin notes. This universal nature is captured beautifully in her oversized wooden junk space.

The Creation Process

The first item Baldwin crafted was an enormous pair of corded earbuds. She adds a few objects daily, relishing the project’s relatability. The task allows her to explore the intersection of material experimentation and the power of detailed craftsmanship within the confines of this monumental storage space.

Future Plans for the Installation

Baldwin aims to find a public display venue for her completed work. “I am hoping to find somewhere to display it,” she shares. She envisions allowing the objects to remain loose in the large wooden drawer for an interactive experience, where viewers can sift through and uncover hidden details among the layers of ‘junk.’
