A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Architecture in Norway’s Cabin Sande
Perched on the rocky headland of Randaberg, Norway, Helen & Hard Architects‘ Cabin Sande stands as a testament to innovative design. Eighteen spruce trees form the cabin’s structural frame, each one rising through its 112-square-meter space. Conceived by studio founders Reinhard Kropf and Siv Helene Stangeland, this cabin is the product of twelve years of meticulous planning and design refinement. It perfectly encapsulates the essence of this architectural marvel.


Inspired by Viking Boatbuilding Traditions
In a nod to Norwegian boatbuilding techniques, particularly those from the Viking Age, the architects used the natural curves of the trees’ trunks and roots in the junctions. Each tree was carefully excavated with its roots intact, allowed to air-dry for eight months, then digitally scanned. Robots crafted the joints directly from these scans, preserving each tree’s unique form within the cabin’s column-and-beam system. This innovative structure beautifully marries ancient techniques with modern technology.

Design That Embraces the Atlantic Coast
The cabin’s layout features a fan-shaped design that opens westward, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic. Pairs of cantilevered beams form an uninterrupted nine-meter-wide horizontal opening, ensuring your view of the sea remains unbroken. The use of continuous glass maximizes connection with the surrounding landscape, while the stone plinth crafted from local rock anchors the cabin to its site.
