Fiat‘s Multiplay, a fiat multiplay concept car, can start the day as a six-seat family minivan and end it as a pickup. A sliding rear section makes the change.
Disclosure: Dezeen’s video interview with Fiat CEO Arnaud Belloni was produced for Stellantis, Fiat’s parent group, as part of a partnership.
A fiat multiplay concept car that becomes a pickup
Fiat unveiled the Multiplay at the 2026 Paris Motor Show. Dezeen reports that the concept car measures 4.45 metres long and blends three vehicle types: the passenger space of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), the raised stance of an SUV, and the open cargo area of a pickup.
Fiat’s shape-shifting approach to interior space has a parallel in camper design, where a fold-down bed and office turn a single cabin into several rooms. Leisure Travel Vans’ 2027 Wonder Series motorhome layouts show how flexible living space works in practice.

The rear section of this fiat multiplay concept car slides to convert the enclosed passenger compartment into an open load bed. Motor1 describes the mechanism as a movable module that runs along dedicated guides. The architecture carries the name “Metamorfosi,” according to Motor1.
A nod to the Multipla
The Multiplay borrows its name and philosophy from the Fiat Multipla. Dezeen notes that the original Fiat 600 Multipla, launched in 1956, carried six people in a body just 3.5 metres long. InsideEVs adds that the first-generation Multipla from the 1950s was loved across Italy for that feat, and that a second generation followed in 1998.

Belloni credits the earlier car with more than a shape. “Basically, that car invented the concept of multipurpose vehicle, the MPV,” he said, referring to the original model.

Three ways to use one vehicle
In family mode, the Multiplay seats six passengers and a modular seventh. Movable seats can be repositioned for different passenger and cargo layouts. Dezeen says the bed suits bicycles, sports equipment and other bulky items.

The rear spoiler rotates into an integrated bicycle rack that carries two bikes, according to Dezeen and Motor1. Motor1 adds that Fiat has not disclosed the pickup bed’s dimensions or payload capacity.
Belloni sums up the idea in one line. “Multiplay can slide from an MPV to an SUV to a pickup,” he said. “That, I would say, is a symbol of freedom.”

Inside the cabin
Inside this fiat multiplay concept car, the modular “Petsenger” seat can carry a pet, hold a child car seat or serve as a small table. InsideEVs reports that part of the seat cushion detaches to become a leash, and a folding bowl stores in a door compartment.

The front passenger seat turns toward the rear to form a reclining Sunseat. Its backrest is the dashboard, and it sits beneath a panoramic roof. Dezeen says a digital display built into the dashboard switches off completely when the car is powered down.
InsideEVs says Fiat describes the horizontal dashboard strip as inspired by the Mediterranean horizon, where sky and sea appear to meet.
Colour and materials
The exterior of the fiat multiplay concept car is bright green, drawn from the colours of a watermelon rind. Inside, red and pink tones echo the fruit’s flesh, as InsideEVs describes it. Dezeen says the textiles were made with a stitch-free, three-dimensional knitting process.
A testing ground, not a product plan
Fiat presented the Multiplay alongside the Multiplina, a three-metre electric concept with four seats and two doors. Dezeen reports that Fiat calls the Multiplay a testing ground for future design solutions, not a preview of a specific production model.
Motor1 reports that Fiat has not announced a powertrain, battery capacity or performance figures for the fiat multiplay concept car. InsideEVs argues that the short overhangs and long wheelbase suit an electric platform, but Fiat has not confirmed that choice.
The concept also has a historical cousin. InsideEVs notes that Citroën, now under the same group as Fiat, sold the 2003 C3 Pluriel. That small two-door could be a hatchback, a convertible or a roadster pickup. Its roof had reliability and water ingress problems, and most owners kept the roof rails in place and used it as a cabriolet.
Belloni frames the wider goal in broad terms. “Fiat is obsessed with all types of mobility on each size of car,” he said. “So whatever the size, we are able to invent new categories of vehicles.”
If Fiat’s electric-platform question interests you, compare how another carmaker mixes electrification with traditional craft. Bentley’s electric Torcal blends old-school elegance with modern tech offers a useful contrast.
Whether the Multiplay reaches a showroom is unknown. Fiat has shown how far a family car can bend, and the next question is how much of that bending customers will pay for.
